Helen Lee
Clerk of Session

Helen’s story is the story of God's grace and mercy.  She was born in China during the Japanese invasion of China and in the Chinese tradition of arranged marriages, was engaged at birth.  However, her parents were not able to keep her during the war so took her to the male baby's house since she would be a part of their family anyway.  Unable to care for two infants, the new family put Helen in a basket by the side of the road with a sheet over her and her birth date tucked inside.  Ten days later they came to see if anyone had taken her, but she was still there and alive so they took her to a nearby missionary compound.  Helen was 3 months old and weighed less than 2 pounds - she was called the miracle baby.

Helen came to the United States in 1949 and was able to attend Christian elementary school, high school and college.  She attended the University of Michigan through a scholarship, receiving her Master’s Degree in Social Work and working in that field for almost 40 years.  Helen and her husband of 53 years, Sang Ki, have been active members of churches in New Jersey, New York and Arizona, and for the past 40 years, in IL.  Helen has served the 1st Presbyterian Church of Itasca on the Nominating Committee and as Deacon and elder. She has been the Clerk of Session for the past 10 years.
